Celebrating freedom
Liberation Day (Bevrijdingsdag), on the 5th of May, is the day the Dutch celebrate their liberation by the allies from the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands (1945). Liberation day is the day after Remembrance Day (on the 4th of May) and on the 5th of May the liberation of the Netherlands is celebrated. Various activities and events are planned throughout Amsterdam.
Liberation festivals
One of the highlights of Liberation Day are the liberation festivals that take place throughout the Netherlands. The festivals have extensive music programs and large acts that are all about freedom. Music is heard in various places in the city during live performances by Dutch bands, international artists and DJs.
A list of liberation festivals
In the Westerpark you will find the biggest FREE Liberation festival of Amsterdam. With a varied program of bands including the Ambassador of Freedom, DJs, a market and children’s activities on more than 7 stages throughout the park.

You can also visti The Vrijland Festival. Vrijland Festival will land this year on Amsterdam’s North Coast. A new location on an undiscovered headland in Amsterdam-Noord. Expect secret paths, hidden containers and a beautiful view on the IJ. This is not a free festival. It’s rather popular events, so get your tickets early!

Het Amsterdams Verbond is also a popular Liberation Festival. On May 5, 2019, Amsterdam’s nightlife will reunite at Het Amsterdams Verbond. The festival will take place at Tuinen van West is located in Amsterdam West (Geuzenveld). This is not a free festival, but the line up is very extensive! Take a look at Het Amsterdams Verbond.

Public transport
The public transport runs on 4 and 5 May due to the different commemorative meetings and Liberation Festivals adapted routes. You will find information about this on the GVB site.
