Chinese New Year is the most important celebration of the Chinese and is celebrated in the Chinese communities worldwide alongside Amsterdam. It marks the start of the new Lunar year, in 2020 the year of the Rat. Also in Amsterdam, it’s an annual event that takes place on and around the Nieuwmarkt, Gelderse Kade and the Zeedijk in the center, also known as Amsterdam’s Chinatown. Because it’s also an event in Amsterdam, activities have been planned on Dam Square in recent years.
The Chinese New Year falls in 2020 on Saturday, January 25. Before, during and after this day various festivities take place in the center of Amsterdam where Chinese traditions are central.
